Commanders notebook: Jayden Daniels recovery watch; Frankie Luvu's reputation; Cornerback intrigue
Washington turns its attention to the Lions without the injured Daniels, but with Luvu available after the league overturned his 1-game suspension and curiosity involving Mike Sainristil's role.
ASHBURN, Va. — The Washington Commanders have yet to place Jayden Daniels on the injured reserve list. That procedural move could occur at any time or never at all.
Head coach Dan Quinn said the organization will hold a final medical meeting on Wednesday, including the inclusion of second opinions, to “put the plan together” for the electric quarterback. Daniels was knocked out of Sunday’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks with a dislocated left elbow injury.
Initial X-rays returned negative, meaning nothing was broken. Results from a completed MRI examination would indicate whether any ligament damage occurred with the dislocation. Quinn anticipates an update ahead of Sunday’s home game against the Detroit Lions.
One standard consideration is whether an injured player’s rehabilitation timeline would keep him sidelined more than four games. If so, IR is the no-brainer call, which raises the question of whether Daniels plays again this season. If no or unclear, then holding the player on the active roster likely depends on the player’s importance to the bigger cause. The face of the franchise/offensive driver is important.
